Creamy Body Wash & Hand Soap

Creamy Body Wash & Hand Soap

I have such a supportive husband who has joined me on my low-tox journey. He’s put up with countless conversations about endocrine disruptors, and been patient with me as I’ve slowly replaced every cleaning chemical and personal care product in our household.
HOWEVER, I just couldn’t get him to give up his (what I refer to as) ‘Blue Shit Body Wash’.
Challenge accepted.
I’ve been testing and refining a new recipe for a lusciously creamy, super smooth body wash that is 100% hubby approved.
And I’ve done it! He loves the texture and the scent.
We have thrown the Blue Shit Body Wash in the bin where it belongs, and I am now proud to share this recipe with you.

This recipe almost fills a 1ltr bottle as we use it for the whole family, but you can certainly half it if you like.

Creamy Body Wash & Hand Soap

This luscious body wash recipe is great for the whole family and is gentle and safe for children.
You can tailor it each time with your choice of essential oils, or even divide the batch before adding your oils so that each family member has their preferred scent.

Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 1 Litre

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Mixer, electric whisk or beater
  • Spatula
  • Funnel
  • 1 ltr bottle

Ingredients

  • 100 ml hot water
  • 50 g coconut oil solid form
  • 2 tsp xanthan gum
  • 400 ml distilled water or boiled then cooled water
  • 200 ml castile soap

Essential Oils

  • 20-40 drops preferred essential oil see notes for suggestions

Instructions

  • Add hot water, coconut oil and xanthan gum to the bowl
  • Mix/whisk until smooth and combined.  Try and make sure the xanthan gum is well mixed in and there are no lumps. Mix will thicken and turn into what I affectionately call: a 'ball of snot'
  • Add remaining ingredients and mix again until mixture is light and fluffy.  It will become very airated and bubbly so will rise by.....A LOT (hence why the big bowl is needed) This could take quite a few minutes if you’re whisking by hand but should only take 2-3 minutes if using an electric mixer or whisk. Periodically, scrape mixture down from sides of bowl
  • Leave to sit for up to an hour so that the mixture reduces and the bubbles collapse.  This will make it much easier to pour into your bottle
  • Use a funnel to pour into your dispensing bottle

Notes

When sourcing a pump bottle, decide if you want glass or PET. If you are using it for body wash, I would recommend PET - glass in the shower is a little dangerous!  Remember that essential oils will break down plastic if it's not PET 1 or 2, so beware of using just any old plastic bottle.
I've used both a stick mixer with a whisk attachment and a stand mixer to make this recipe.  Both work great (the stand mixer is easier as you can set and forget!).  I imagine you could also use a regular hand held mixer or even whisk by hand - but that would take a while.  If anyone tries these methods, I'd love to hear how you go!
